If you are in the middle Tennessee area, you are aware of the rolling blackouts that TVA has imposed. We were without power at our house for about 30 minutes this morning. Because of that Nashville mayor John Cooper is asking for all non-essential businesses to reduce their power usage today.
My guess is that he’s taken to Twitter with that because the Titans probably told him there was no way that was going to happen. There is no doubt TVA needs to invest in infrastructure. The growth that has happened in this area over the last decade has been crazy. If the power grid can’t handle it, they should probably take a harder look at how they issue building permits, but that is a different discussion for a different type of website.

Scott Barzilla of Battle Red Blog was nice enough to answer five questions about his Houston Texans for us ahead of Saturday’s game. Be sure to head over to BRB to see his questions about the Tennessee Titans with my answers.

1. The Texans have been in games late with good teams the last two weeks? What have they been doing well?

The Texans have done a better job of taking advantage of mistakes. They’ve created turnovers and have converted those into touchdowns. They scored 14 points off three Cowboys turnovers and converted two KC turnovers into points. It is hard to believe but the Texans are roughly equal in turnover differential which seems bizarre for a one win team. They are 1-5-1 in one score games this season. Pep Hamilton’s offense has been more imaginative the past two weeks as well. He and Smith are coaching for their lives right now and it shows.

2. Derrick Henry ran all over this defense last time. Has anything changed to make them better equipped to stop him this time?

Henry has gained 200 or more yards each time he’s gone up against the Texans since 2020. I don’t know if he gets there this time but it won’t be because of anything the Texans do. The Chiefs gained more than 180 and they aren’t even a running team. Christian Harris (our rookie linebacker) seems to have hit his stride, but our defensive tackles are not equipped to take on extra blockers or keep linemen from reaching the second level. I’d bet the farm on the Titans gaining more than 200 yards as a team even if it isn’t Henry doing all of it. The weather forecast has some cooler temperatures (5 degrees at game time) coming, so I imagine both teams will try to run it more.

3. If the Texans get the first pick in the draft, will they take a QB? Which guy do you prefer?

Goodness knows what they will do, but the odds are good that they will select a quarterback. Bryce Young would be my pick. He’s put up great numbers against SEC competition and did it this year without great players around him. He’s got great leadership skills, is very studious, and very good athleticism. They say he has more arm talent than any of the other QB prospects, but I can’t say for sure. The only knock on him is his size, but he is a throw first quarterback, so he should be okay on the next level. There are never any guarantees but he feels like the best chance we have to get a franchise quarterback.

4. How many core players do the Texans currently have on their roster?

I think they have quite a few rotation guys on both side of the ball, but if you mean solid starters or all-pro guys I’d say they have Laremy Tunsil, Tytus Howard, and Dameon Pierce on offense (though he’s out). I’m hoping Nico Collins develops into a good second receiver. Kenyon Green had talent and the pedigree to be a good guard, but he hasn’t shown that yet. We are hoping that Harris, Jalen Pitre, and Derek Stingley, and maybe Ogbonnia Okoronkwo on the defensive end. They have a lot of solid football players on both side but no real difference makers yet.

5. The line moved from Titans -7 to Titans -5 with the news that Ryan Tannehill may not play*. Which side of that bet are you taking?

I would have taken the Texans at seven, but can’t do it with the line at five. We are good at the back door cover but even in the last two games they’ve finished around there. If I wanted to make easy money I’d bet the farm on Derrick Henry getting over 100 or even 150 yards. I think it will be a close game due to the weather but the Texans don’t have the running game without Pierce in the backfield. I think something like 20-14 Titans seems right.

*This was sent before the report that Ryan Tannehill is likely out for the year. The line has moved to Titans -3 as of this post.

Which Texans could make the biggest impact in this Christmas Eve showdown?

The Tennessee Titans will look to break a four-game losing streak on Saturday as they host the Houston Texans in what looks to be a rough weather day on Saturday with a projected high of 23 degrees in Nashville.

The Titans will look to sweep the season series and get a key AFC South win against a Texans team that enters with the worst record in the league, but has given two of the league’s top teams, the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs, extremely close games over the last two weeks.

This Texans team has not thrown in the towel on the season, despite a 1-12-1 record, falling by just four to the Cowboys and taking the AFC West champion Chiefs to overtime last week after leading most of the game.

Saturday will be a fight, especially with the Titans continuing to deal with injuries at key positions but this matchup represents a big opportunity for Tennessee to end this recent losing skid and gain some momentum in the final weeks with the AFC South race coming down to the wire.

As the Titans and Texans prepare to battle on Saturday, here are three Texans players to keep an eye on.

#1. Davis Mills

Davis Mills is a guy to keep an eye on for the Houston Texans as the man under center directing the Houston offense.

Mills hasn’t taken the leap many Houston fans hoped he would this season, leaving plenty of questions for the future of the QB spot in Houston. Mills has completed about 62 percent of his passes for 2,440 yards and 13 touchdowns, but 12 interceptions.

Last week against the Chiefs, Mills completed just 50 percent of his passes (12/24) and threw for just 121 yards, but Mills did throw two touchdown passes with no interceptions and ran for another score.

However, the turnover bug that has riddled Mills all season came into play in overtime with Mills losing a crucial fumble in overtime that set up the game-winning score.

Mills has been turnover-prone all season, and if the Titans can force a couple turnovers from Houston’s QB, that could be key to landing a divisional win.

#2. Chris Moore

Chris Moore has been the Texans top receiving option the last three weeks, catching 17 passes for 212 yards over the last three weeks, including a 10 catch, 124 yard performance against the Cowboys.

In each of the last three weeks, Moore has had a catch of more than 30 yards.

We can reasonably expect that the Texans will draw up a couple of downfield throws for Moore based off his body of work the last couple weeks.

The Titans have had some problems with opposing receivers this year, so the secondary must keep a close eye on Moore Saturday and avoid any big plays down the field.

#3. Jalen Pitre

The Houston safety leads the team in tackles and is all over the field for the Texans defense.

In the last three games, Pitre has recorded 41 tackles, with double-digit tackles each of the last three games.

He leads the team with 117 total tackles on the season, along with a sack, three interceptions, and 6 passes defended.

The rookie is a key part of the Texans defense and is around the ball on nearly every play.

That might be the end of Ben Jones’s career

The Tennessee Titans placed C Ben Jones on IR today. This comes on the heels of Jones being in concussion protocol for the second time in just over a month. We might have seen the last of Jones in the NFL. He has been an ironman playing through injuries, but two concussions in this short of a period might just be enough to force Jones to hang it up. If this is the end for him, he will be missed in the Titans’ locker room.

The team also placed Terrance Mitchell on IR. The defensive back room has been hit really hard with injuries this offseason. Hopefully, they will get Tre Avery back this week.

Daniel Munyer, who the Titans added to the practice squad earlier this week, has been signed to the 53-man roster. He could be in line to start at left guard with Aaron Brewer sliding over to play center with Jones out.

Can the Titans still win the division with Malik Willis?

The Tennessee Titans are not confirming it, but Paul Kuharsky has reported that Ryan Tannehill is out for the year. PK says that Tannehill’s ankle injury will require surgery. That means this is Malik Willis’s team the rest of the way. The Titans are going to get to learn a lot about their rookie quarterback over the next 3+ weeks.

It’s actually not the worst thing in the world for a team that isn’t a Super Bowl contender. You want to win the division, and they still can, but now you get to see if Willis can be the guy you trust going forward. Maybe he plays well and next year you have the combination of Willis and Josh Dobbs as your quarterbacks. They could still win games with a good defense and running game.

It is going to be an interesting end to what has been a crazy season.

The Titans should get some guys back in this one. Mike Vrabel didn’t rule out Treylon Burks, Amani Hooker or Denico Autry out today. All three of those guys missed last week. It sounds like all three have a chance to play here.

The Titans have only ruled Tannehill out of this game, but Paul Kuharsky is reporting that Tannehill’s season is over. Rookie quarterback Malik Willis will start against the Texans and presumably for the rest of the season. Tannehill’s second ankle injury of the season may require surgery to repair damaged ligaments.

Jones and Davis are Tennessee’s two best (or only good) offensive linemen. Dillon Radunz also suffered a season-ending knee injury. Tennessee’s offensive line is going to be sad on Saturday. Dennis Daley will start at left tackle with Nicholas Petit-Frere at right tackle. Aaron Brewer will either start at left guard or center. Jordan Roos and Corey Levin are likeliest to fill in the remaining interior spots. Le’Raven Clark is another option at guard.

The Titans signed a plethora of offensive linemen to their practice squad earlier this week. One or two of them will be active as backups. Jones has been placed on IR. Jones’ season is likely over. Daniel Munyer was added to the 53-man roster in a corresponding move.

Fulton and Mitchell will be missed. Tennessee continues to deal with mounting injuries at cornerback. Elijah Molden and Chris Jackson are on IR. Caleb Farley suffered a season-ending injury. Mitchell was placed on IR. Tre Avery is expected to clear concussion protocol and return. Avery is officially listed as questionable and should start on the boundary opposite Roger McCreary. John Reid and Greg Mabin are alternative options. Joshua Kalu or a hopefully returning Amani Hooker will play the slot.

It’s not all bad news. Denico Autry, Treylon Burks and Zach Cunningham are expected to return. Burks provides Willis with a legitimate No. 1 reciever. Autry should get Tennessee’s dwindling pass rush back on track. Cunningham will start next to Monty Rice with both Cole and David Long Jr. (IR) out. Jack Gibbens will be the No. 3 ILB.

The Texans have some injury concerns of their own. They’ve ruled out wide receiver Nico Collins and offensive linemen Kenyon Green. Brandin Cooks is questionable.

Rookie quarterback Malik Willis takes over for the remainder of the season. Willis momentarily replaced Tannehill against the Chargers, completing 3-of-4 passing attempts for 20 yards. Willis also gained eight rushing yards via one scramble. Titans head coach Mike Vrabel praised Willis for his preparation and handling of entering the game unexpectedly. Willis received starting QB reps during the open portion of Wednesday’s practice and was the quarterback made available to the media in Tannehill’s usual time slot.

Willis actually started Tennessee’s first contest against the Texans earlier this season. Tannehill missed that game with a similar ankle injury. Willis helped oversee a comfortable 17-10 Titans victory. Willis attempted just 10 passes and finished with 55 passing yards.

Tannehill’s future with the Titans looms large. Tannehill is signed through the 2023 campaign. The Titans owe him a base salary of $27 million next season, per Spotrac. Tannehill is scheduled to carry a cap hit of $36.6 million, via Spotrac. The Titans could save approximately $17.8 million against next season’s salary cap by releasing Tannehill.

There’s no question that Tannehill gives the 2023 Titans their best chance at remaining competitive in a stacked AFC conference. The Titans’ next general manager may prefer to oversee a full rebuild on offense, however. Whoever quarterbacks the Titans in 2023 will require several offseason investments across the offensive line and at wide receiver in order to possess a chance of achieving legitimate success.

Jon Robinson failed this team by failing to secure NFL-level players on the offensive line and at wide receiver. Tannehill has been a victim of his surroundings. Tannehill has been a terrific leader for the Titans.

Second-year offensive tackle Dillon Radunz was also placed on season-ending IR. Radunz suffered a knee injury in Sunday’s loss. It places the beginning of Radunz’s 2023 season in danger.

A game the Titans should win on paper

For about 10 million reasons, this has to be a Derrick Henry game. For the purposes of this post, the reason is that the Houston Texans are giving up 167.5 yards per game on the ground. That’s a ridiculous number. Henry is a big part of the reason that number is so high. He had 219 rushing yards when these teams met back in October.

When you look at the Tennessee Titans' number on offense, it is truly amazing that they are 7-7. That is good for 26th in the league. We know the 10 million reasons for that as well, so I won’t rehash them here.

If the Titans are going to win this game, it is going to have to be very similar to the game in October.
