Here is everything you need to know about watching the Titans vs. Chargers game!

I want to have faith here. The Tennessee Titans under Mike Vrabel have had a knack for showing up in games just like this in years past. They haven’t had that surprise win yet this year. They almost pulled it off in Kansas City but came up short. Is today the day?

The issue, of course, is that the Titans are missing so many guys - particularly on defense - and they are going up against a Los Angeles Chargers team that has a lot of weapons on offense. It is hard to see how Justin Herbert doesn’t have a monster game here.

The Titans need this to be a Derrick Henry game!

It feels like every week when I do the numbers breakdown it should be a Derrick Henry game. The Tennessee Titans finally got him going in the first quarter last week before the wheels fell off in the second quarter. This week he faces a Los Angeles Chargers defense that is giving up 147 yards per game on the ground. That ranks 28th in the NFL.

Of course, the key for the Titans to sustain a Henry game is to say in positive game script. To do that they have to protect the ball and not give up big plays to a Los Angeles Chargers offense that averages 272.9 passing yards per game. Mike Williams is their big play guy. He has battled some injuries this year but is currently healthy. With Kristian Fulton likely to miss this game, it will be a big challenge for his secondary not to give up plays over the top. That’s part of the reason I thought the Titans would be more than a 3-point underdog.

Some good information on the Chargers

Michael Peterson of Bolts from the Blue was nice enough to answer five questions about his Los Angeles Chargers for us ahead of this weekend’s game. Be sure and head over to Bolts from the Blue to see Michael’s questions with my answers.

1. Give us a scouting report on Justin Herbert. What does he do well? Where does he struggle?

Herbert has been, arguably, the only reason this team isn’t pining for a top-10 pick in this year’s draft. I truly believe that there is an incredibly short list of quarterbacks who could have taken this same team situation with the Chargers and kept the team alive for the postseason this late into the year.

Herbert’s intelligence makes him an excellent fit for Joe Lombardi’s offense that requires the quarterback to essentially make the perfect decision over and over and over again. His ability to go through reads at a breakneck speed is astounding and it’s a big reason why his turnover-worthy throw percentage is one of the best in the league. Of his seven interceptions this season, only one wasn’t either a drop from one of his pass-catchers or a deflection at the line of scrimmage. Herbert has some of the worst luck when it comes to these situations and it doesn’t help when the offense is so predictable that defensive lineman can time their deflections perfectly on most dropbacks.

Another area where I feel Herbert is elite is his ability to maneuver the pocket. This was on full display against the Dolphins where he was essentially running for his life on every other play only to record a completion six yards down the field. But again, that’s just the offense he’s being asked to play within. Lastly, he’s an absolute menace when throwing on the run. He’s been one of the best ever since he entered the league in 2020 and it’s incredible how we haven’t seen him regress at all in that area over the past 2+ seasons.

Now as for where he struggles? That’s tough. One of the positives I mentioned above can also be seen as a negative in that, when it comes to his processing speed, he can occasionally go a bit too fast and miss receivers who would come open moments after they looked to be covered. It happened at least once against the Dolphins and it was quite apparent on the replay just how those moments can happen.

2. How equipped are the Chargers to stop Derrick Henry?

In all honesty, they’re not all that equipped to do that. The team is still missing some of their impact players among the front seven (defensive tackle Austin Johnson, edge rusher Joey Bosa) and it remains to be seen if defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day will make his return this week after missing the Dolphins game with a knee injury. Derwin James is also still a non-participant in practice this week and his absence would certainly make things easier for Henry to run inside or outside against this defense.

Linebackers Drue Tranquill and Kenneth Murray both played a heck of a game against the Dolphins and they’ll both have to strive for a repeat performance if they don’t want Henry to run rampant on Sunday. Lastly, the defensive backs are going to have to understand that for the team to truly put a cap on Henry, they’ll have to mix it up in the run game just like everyone else. It’s certainly not what they ever WANT to do, but if they can find the courage to put a lick on Henry early, that could go a long way in telling the Titans that this defense truly came to play.

3. Give us a player on the defensive side of the ball that we have never heard of who will have an impact on this game.

This is a tough one. I’m going to go with backup strong safety Alohi Gilman. The former Notre Dame product got the start against the Dolphins in place of James and had one of the best games of his career. On the very first play of the game, the Dolphins attempted to get Tyreek Hill matched up with Gilman up the sideline and it ended in a nice pass breakup for the Chargers. That play helped set the tone for the rest of the game and it ended up leading many to believe Gilman deserves more of a starting role on this defense going forward.

In the game against the Browns earlier this season, Gilman also got the start due to free safety Nasir Adderley sitting out with an injury. Not only did he play well, but he also helped seal the game by picking off Jacoby Brissett in the end zone.

4. Grade the job Brandon Staley has done in his first (almost) 2 years as the head coach. Is he a guy that can lead the Chargers to a Super Bowl?

Through nearly two seasons, I believe I’d give Brandon Staley a solid “B” at this point in his head-coaching career. He had a winning record in his first season with the Chargers and he’s poised to potentially match the 9-8 record, or even improve on it, by the end of this year despite dealing with a horrendously long list of notable injuries. People forget that the Chargers played a good chunk of last season with a makeshift secondary that often saw the Chargers starter players that were signed off the streat just days prior. This year, they’ve missed several Pro Bowlers and a pair of All-Pro players. If anything, despite all the problems with this team, it may be one of the better coaching performances in recent years when you consider that Staley has not only kept this team afloat for a winning record, but they could very well end up in the postseason after all that they’ve been through.

Do I believe Staley can lead them to the Super Bowl? I actually do, but I also believe he has to make some tough coaching staff changes to make that happen. As it stands, the offense isn’t in a sustainable enough place to take this team deep into the playoffs. It’s predicated off Herbert being absolutely perfect down-in and down-out and that’s just now how you want your team to function for the entirety of a long, long season.

5. The Chargers are a 3-point favorite in this one. Which side of that bet are you taking?

I can’t believe I’m saying it, but I’m taking the Chargers here. In a game where both defenses are near the bottom when it comes to defending what the opposing offense wants to do, I’ll take the team that wants to pass over the one that wants to run it every play. If the game remains close near the end, the team that can score quicker is likely in the better place to come out on top before time ticks away. So give me the Chargers 26-24 at home on Sunday.

Are the Titans getting healthier?

The Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Chargers released their first injury report on Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s AFC showdown. The Titans received some good news with the return of Denico Autry. The likes of Kristian Fulton, Treylon Burks and Robert Woods were absent from practice.

Autry last featured for the Titans against the Green Bay Packers on November 17. He’s officially listed as a limited participant. Tennessee’s pass-rushing productivity has fallen off a cliff since losing Autry. The Titans have recorded just three quarterback sacks in three contests since then. Autry’s return could get Tennessee’s defense trending back in the appropriate direction.

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed that Burks remains in the concussion protocol. Burks sustained a scary-looking head injury against the Philadelphia Eagles. Burks still has time to clear protocol prior to Sunday’s showing versus the Chargers. Tennessee’s anemic passing attack desperately needs their first-year playmaker back in the lineup.

Starting inside linebacker Zach Cunningham also returned to practice on Wednesday. The Titans triggered Cunningham’s return-to-practice window prior to practice. Cunningham doesn’t appear on the injury report because he isn’t technically on the 53-man roster. Cunningham’s return would be a welcome sight for a linebacker core that’s also without David Long Jr. Monty Rice and Dylan Cole have been playing bad football as of late.

Fulton continues to miss practice with an ongoing groin injury. Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen needs his No. 1 cornerback roaming his secondary. At least rookie cornerback Tre Avery returned to practice as a limited participant following a concussion.

No. 2 running back Dontrell Hilliard was also absent. Hilliard suffered a scary looking neck injury on Sunday. Hilliard has captured an underrated role as Tennessee’s pass-catching back. The Titans’ offense will miss what he offers. Undrafted free agent running back Julius Chestnut should continue being active on game day if Hilliard misses time. Fellow special teams contributor C.J. Board did not practice with a rib injury. Tennessee’s special teams units would also miss Board and Hilliard.

Derwin James is the lone Chargers starter that missed Wednesday’s practice with a quad injury. Defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day was a limited participant with a knee injury. Cornerback Bryce Callahan (groin) and right tackle Trey Pipkins (knee) were also limited participants.

The Titans needed to add a veteran quarterback to their practice squad. The Atlanta Falcons signed Logan Woodside off Tennessee’s practice squad to their active 53-man roster earlier this week. Former Titan Marcus Mariota landed on IR after being benched in favor of rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder. Woodside will serve as Ridder’s backup moving forward.

Hogan makes sense for the Titans as Woodside’s replacement. Hogan spent a portion of the 2021 campaign on the Titans’ practice squad and active gameday roster. He made one regular-season appearance. Hogan knows the system, which is the most important quality in a practice squad quarterback.

Roos rejoins the Titans after being waived over the weekend. Roos is a versatile interior linemen. His release was merely a necessity to make the numbers up for additional personnel moves. Roos was always expected to land back in Tennessee.

McCloud played college football at Miami. McCloud is a rookie undrafted free agent. The Titans are already his third team this season. At Miami, McCloud played 59 games over six seasons and totaled 100 tackles, 11 sacks, 22.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and four passes defensed.

The Titans still have two empty roster spots on their 53-man roster after waiving Ola Adeniyi and Joe Schobert on Monday. Kyle Philips and Zach Cunningham are eligible to return off iR. Hopefully the Titans are getting healthier.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news. It qualifies as a minor surprise.

Adeniyi recently returned to the Titans’ lineup after a neck injury sidelined him for several weeks. Adeniyi has recorded just two solo tackles this season. He’s been credited with totaling two pressures, two hurries and two stops, per Pro Football Focus. Adeniyi hasn’t rushed the passer with effectiveness this season. It’s worth noting the sample size has been small. Adeniyi has 42 pass-rushing snaps throughout the 2022 campaign.

Titans interim general manager Ryan Cowden continues to leave his thumbprint on the Titans’ roster. Previous general manager Jon Robinson signed Adeniyi to a one-year contract prior to the 2021 season. He then re-signed Adeniyi to another one-year contract in the offseason.

Adeniyi is also a special teams ace. His absence may be felt in that department. It’s previously been unlike the Titans to release quality special teams players. Adeniyi’s release signals a potential shift in thinking from Cowden and the Titans in general.

Tarell Basham was recently signed to rush the passer. He’ll be replacing Adeniyi as Tennessee’s rotational pass rusher. Denico Autry is still getting healthy. Mario Edwards Jr. and DeMarcus Walker will continue to play reserve roles.

The Titans also released veteran linebacker Joe Schobert on Monday. Schobert had been playing in place of David Long Jr. and Zach Cunningham, both of which remain on IR. Schobert’s release may indicate Cunningham is nearing a return. Schobert has been abysmal when asked to play in coverage and in space.

I really thought that number would be higher

The Tennessee Titans have opened as a 3-point underdog on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers. That number seems low to me after watching both teams play yesterday. If the Titans don’t get some guys back on defense they are going to have trouble holding the Chargers under 30 points. Do we have any confidence the Titans can score 30? Nope.

It will be interesting to see who they are able to get back from injury this week. We know David Long will be out. If the Titans are missing Denico Autry and Kristian Fulton again, it is going to make for a long Sunday in LA.

The guys on offense to watch for are Treylon Burks and Kyle Philips. Burks should have a good chance to clear concussion protocol. Philips still hasn’t practiced after being placed on IR with a hamstring injury but can come back at any time now. The offensive line is trash and that’s not changing. Having additional weapons out there would at least give them a chance to make some plays, I guess....
