A look into Free Agency- Interior Defensive Line

This is a look into free agency concerning the interior defensive lineman. I will try and do each position of need for the Titans as long as I stay bored at work during this slow period. The salaries projected come from PFF.

Not Going To Happen

These Players are just flat out too expensive to pair with Jeffery Simmons.

CHRIS JONES, KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

(29 years old) I can’t see the Titans putting $30 million a year out there with already paying Jeffery Simmons. They would make a crazy pair that would shred O-Lines but not happening.

Contract Projection: Four years, $120 million ($30 million per year), $80 million total guaranteed

JUSTIN MADUBUIKE, BALTIMORE RAVENS

(26 yrs old) Madubuike made a strong case to get paid in 2023. But the same goes with him as it does with Jones… Just too much money being allocated to the IDL.

Contract Projection: Four years, $92 million ($23 million per year), $60.25 million total guaranteed

Talent/Production/Age/Price doesn’t match Titans rebuild

These players are good players, not great, will cost a lot, and the money doesn’t justify the player.

LEONARD WILLIAMS, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

(29 years old) Traded to the Seahawks in 2023 for second- and fifth-round picks, did not pay as hoped for. I can’t see this being a priority sign for the Titans; the production/need does not meet projected contract numbers.

Contract Projection: Three years, $51.75 million ($17.25 million per year), $37.25 million total guaranteed

D.J. READER, CINCINNATI BENGALS

(29 years old) Reader is nothing short of a dominant IDL. 29 years old is trending in the wrong direction for this franchise though. If you wanted to make a splash on talent and go a bit older, this might be a move the Titans could make. However, the knock is injury concerns. He suffered a torn quadriceps injury in Week 15. Maybe the injury provides a discount due to the risk factor?

Contract Projection: Three years, $45.75 million ($15.25 million per year), $29.75 million total guaranteed

Older, But Presents Value

These players can be a 2-3 year stop gap and play well. Age is the factor.

GROVER STEWART, INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

(30 years old) Stewart returned in Week 14 due to a suspension involving PED’s. He’s a big man that can free up Simmons to work more one on one. Stealing one from the Colts doesn’t hurt either. I think he is on the Titans radar. The contract projection is a little high in my opinion though. Age is also a factor.

Contract Projection: Three years, $30 million ($10 million per year), $20 million total guaranteed

SHELDON RANKINS, HOUSTON TEXANS

(29 years old) Rankins is a good player that can drive OL into the quarterbacks lap. He can also generate decent pass rush and win on spin moves / stunts. It is noted he struggles to disengage from lineman however. He does bring relentlessness in effort. I can see Rankins being on the Titans radar. Another steal from within the division doesn’t hurt either.

Contract Projection: Two years, $20 million ($10 million per year), $12 million total guaranteed

MICHAEL PIERCE, BALTIMORE RAVENS

(31 years old) Pierce is another production vs salary winner in my book. However, age is the knock. Projected at only $5 mil a year, this is where age isn’t a concern in my book. If we can’t make something work with Tart, we can kick the can / roll the dice and see what the later rounds bring us in the draft. Pierce can flat out play.

Contract Projection: Two years, $10 million ($5 million per year), $6.25 million total guaranteed

Value, Age, and Talent

This is where I like the Titans in the FA market. The value, age, and talent all fit the rebuild.

TEAIR TART, TENNESSEE TITANS

(26 years old) Can the Titans make it work with Tart now that Vrabel is gone? I sure hope so. He is one of my favorite options along the IDL. We know who he is, not much needed to say here.

Contract Projection: Three years, $31.5 million ($10.5 million per year), $20.5 million total guaranteed

MAURICE HURST, CLEVELAND BROWNS

(28 years old) Hurst is another great player that suffered an injury this year (pectoral). He seems to be plagued by injuries, and at age 28, I don’t think I’m interested here. Until, I look at the salary projection. Man, now I’m interested in rolling the dice.

Contract Projection: One year, $1.75 million, $1 million guaranteed

JAVON KINLAW, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

(26 years old) Here is a dice roll we must take. The 49ers connections are obvious, don’t need to go down that rabbit hole. Kinlaw is a freak of nature athlete, young, and cheap. These are the types of players that can be a part of a Titans rebuild with little to no risk. Sign me up.

Contract Projection: One year, $5.5 million, $2.5 million total guaranteed
