It was a little bit surprising when the news came out earlier today that the Tennessee Titans had requested an interview with Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson. His just wasn’t a name that was on my radar. It turns out the Titans aren’t the only team interested in interviewing him. The Carolina Panthers have also requested to interview Johnson for their head coaching vacancy.
I reached out to Brandon Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation to get his thoughts on Johnson as a head coaching candidate. Here is what he had to say:
An overwhelming majority of Eagles fans are really down on Brian Johnson since the offense got worse from last year. But I’ve maintained he’s received a disproportionate amount of blame because, at the end of the day, it’s Nick Sirianni’s offense. It’s not like play-calling has been the only issue. Play design is a problem that goes beyond Johnson. Not saying he’s not part of the problem that is an underachieving offense ... but people want to act like Johnson is a total dummy who’s completely in over his head.
Johnson got a lot of OC interest last year before the Eagles promoted him to retain him. He came off pretty sharp, well-articulated, and authentic when he talked to reporters as QB coach before being a bit more guarded at the podium as OC.
He’s had a hand in developing Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott (Mississippi State), and Kyle Trask (Florida).
I think he’s going to be a good head coach one day.
He’s an intriguing guy, but my guess is that he is still a couple of cycles away from getting a head coaching job. In the meantime, he better help figure out a way to get Jalen Hurts back to playing at the level that he did last year or Johnson might have to wait longer for his shot.
