Pay The Man

I’ve been meaning to write about this topic but life got in the way and I couldn’t write about this sooner. Pair this with the fact that the franchise tag has snuck up on me quicker than I realized and here I am writing about this now.

When the Titans selected Harold Landry in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft I’m sure many fans myself included were ecstatic. Had he come out a year earlier with his 16.5 sack his junior year he wouldn’t have fallen in the draft. Prior to this season we all were hoping and expecting Harold Landry to slowly but surely breakout into the pass rusher we saw at Boston College but he never did. You could blame the scheme fit, personnel, coaching staff or whatever but the fact remained that Landry’s production never showed on the field.

That is until this 2021 season. As we all know Harold Landry had a breakout year recording 12 sacks, a career high along with being named a pro bowler. Landry is a free agent this new league year which leaves the Titans in an interesting position with Landry.

My two cents, Jon Robinson needs to pay him. I don’t really care what the cost, who he has to cut, who needs to take a pay cut, or if Landry is our only free agent we bring back; we need to bring Harold Landry back. Okay I was semi-serious with the things I said previously but I really do want Harold Landry back.

Here are a few reasons why I think we should bring Landry back. We knew he had the potential to be a pro bowler when we drafted him and now he finally reached that peak. Why let him go now that he has reached that pro bowl level? Not only did Landry have a breakout year but our entire defense line pretty much had a very good year. Do we really want to let Landry walk now that we actually have a very good pass rush? I don’t think so. Lastly, if we let Harold Landry walk in free agency this may affect the rest of the defensive line’s production next season. The Titans have four legit pass rushers in Denico Autry, Jeffrey Simmons, Harold Landry, and Bud Dupree. Why mess up something good we have going on?

I know that there are some concerns as well. Three of the four years Harold Landry has been here he was nowhere near this productive and this may be a one hit wonder. Also, the Titans are strap pretty tightly by the cap right now. However, we saw the disastrous 2020 year in which the defense had an abysmal 19 sacks on the season 4 of which came in week 17. We know how hard it is to find a pass rusher in free agency. The Titans may be better off keeping our own than trying to replace Landry via free agency or the draft.

Tomorrow is the last day to place a franchise tag and I’ve yet to hear any news about Landry and the tag. Also, there has been no news on contracts being reworked to create more cap space both of which makes me nervous. However, I do feel confident that Jon Robinson will do his best to bring Landry back in two tone blue for the foreseeable future.
