Let me preface this post by saying that I meant to write this several months back so my reaction then will be discussed here but seeing how some things turned out, things might not be as I have thought they would be.
This past offseason we saw many moving of quarterbacks that we have not seen quite frankly ever in the NFL. Most notably Russell Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos, Deshaun Watson was traded to the Cleveland Browns, and Matt Ryan was traded to the Indianapolis Colts. Prior to these shifting of quarterbacks, the AFC was already loaded with some very good quarterbacks such as Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson. Although Deshaun Watson hasn’t played in over a year he too remains a very good quarterback and Derek Carr is still a good quarterback. Guys on the rise also included Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert. And lastly not to mention the young guys that still have a lot of potential includes Tua Tagovailoa, Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, and Mac Jones. Mix in the trade for Wilson and Ryan into the AFC and it’s starting to look like a very loaded conference with good to elite quarterbacks.
Now obviously Matt Ryan proved to not be the answer as he was permanently benched this week in favor of Sam Ehlinger. Russell Wilson is also struggling mightily but with a decade of excellent play in Seattle I’m not yet ready to say that Wilson is a bust with the Denver Broncos. With all of these quarterbacks flooded into the AFC, this conference just got that much more difficult. Notice I’ve left Ryan Tannehill off of the list of quarterbacks above. This is neither a knock on Tannehill nor a list of any sorts in terms of how great they are. I’m just pointing out that with the playoff performance we saw from Tannehill and this conference now having more quarterbacks enter just makes it that much harder for the Titans to succeed. Regardless of how you feel about Tannehill as a quarterback, the entry of all these other quarterbacks will make this conference that much more competitive and difficult to win in.
