The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that Titans 4th round pick Rashad Weaver has been charged with simple assault in Pittsburgh. From the above linked Post-Gazette article:
According to the criminal complaint, police officers found a woman lying on the ground surrounded by a group of people at 2:28 a.m. April 18 on South 17th Street between East Carson and Bingham streets.
Those at the scene said a large man, later identified as Mr. Weaver, punched the woman, Demetria Navjelis. Mr. Weaver was not at the scene when officers arrived. Ms. Navjelis was checked by a medic and released.
Here is the worst part about that story:
Mr. Weaver “stated to other officers on scene that he had no problem hitting a female if they needed it,” according to the complaint.
Wow. Just wow. Look, I know we are a country that presumes innocence, but if that’s not a confession I don’t know what is.
It’s not a good look for the Titans to draft a guy that was charged with simple assault the night before the pick was made. Now there is a good chance that the Titans didn’t know about the arrest when they made the pick because the arrest didn’t happen until April 30th - which is the Friday before he was picked on Saturday.
Should they have known about it? That’s a good question. I can see both sides. But with what happened with Isaiah Wilson last year, they should have been out there turning over every stone on every player they were thinking about picking.
We will continue to follow this story as details emerge.
