Was Jayon Brown to blame for communication problems on the Titans defense?

There was too much confusion to put it all on one person.

Buck Reising mentioned on his new 104.5 The Zone show on Friday that people inside of St. Thomas Sports Park say that Jayon Brown is overvalued in this defense. In fact, he mentioned that part of the problem with the Titans defense in 2020 was the fact that Jayon couldn’t take charge while wearing the green dot. This was the first time I had heard anything like that.

There are a couple of reasons that we shouldn’t put too much of the blame on Jayon:

  1. He only played in 10 games this season, so while he might not have been great with the communication, there were 7 games after he went out that were largely bad.
  2. The defense was so bad that it would be ridiculous to blame it on any one thing. There was plenty of blame to go around from Mike Vrabel to Shane Bowen to Jon Robinson the list goes on...and on...and on...

If what Buck is hearing is true, and there is no reason to believe it isn’t, then it seems like there is a pretty good chance that Brown signs elsewhere when free agency opens. Time will tell.
