Titans free agent spotlight: OT Marshall Newhouse

NFL: Cleveland Browns at Tennessee Titans Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be taking a closer look at the Titans’ free agent class. One by one, we’ll provide some basic details on the player before making an argument for both sides — why the Titans should, or shouldn’t re-sign that player. We’ll also offer our final verdict and a prediction to go along with it.

Name: Marshall Newhouse

Position: offensive tackle

Age: 33

Why the Titans should keep Newhouse: Newhouse was signed to the practice squad in late November. By mid December, he was a member of the 53-man roster. Injuries lead to his signing and eventual roster promotion. He’s a veteran player that has been around the block. He’s played for several winning organizations such as the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots. He’s a good teammate and from a depth perspective, you could do worse.

Why the Titans should let Newhouse walk: He’ll turn 33 years old during the 2021 season. Newhouse was added to the roster late into the 2020 season due to several injuries at the position. The Titans need to think about starting to stash and develop younger offensive linemen as depth pieces. I expect to see at least one, maybe two draft picks across the O-line this April.

Final verdict: Newhouse should not be back.

Prediction: The Titans go in a different direction.
