Over the next few weeks, we’ll be taking a closer look at the Titans’ free agent class. One by one, we’ll provide some basic details on the player before making an argument for both sides — why the Titans should, or shouldn’t re-sign that player. We’ll also offer our final verdict and a prediction to go along with it.
Name: Nick Dzubnar
Position: linebacker
Age: 29
Why the Titans should keep Dzunbar: The Titans signed Dzubnar to a one-year contract last March to help sure up their special teams units. That’s exactly what Dzubnar did in 2020. He’s proven to be an excellent special teams player throughout his NFL career and that continued to be the case in Tennessee. Dzubnar could provide the same special teams ability on the field in 2021 that he did in 2020. Interestingly enough, Dzunbar saw the majority of his defensive snaps in the team’s biggest game of the season, the playoff loss to the Ravens. The Titans went with a smaller front seven in that contest, and the thought was to get more athletic players on the field that could help the team keep Lamar Jackson’s running ability in check. It was a bold move, but one that paid off in my opinion. Dzunbar really surprised me in that game. As you know, the Titans didn’t lose that game because of their defense. In addition to his special teams prowess, Dzubnar proved that he could play a little defense as well.
Why the Titans should let Dzunbar walk: He’ll turn 30 years old during the 2021 season. The team should be able to find a younger player to fill his spot, one with more upside should he have to see snaps as a traditional linebacker on defense.
Final verdict: The Titans have four off-ball linebackers set to hit free agency, and a trio of them are mainly special teams players. Whether it’s Dzubnar, Daren Bates or Will Compton, the Titans are going to have bring a couple of these special teams aces back.
Prediction: The Titans re-sign Dzubnar.
