Titans free agent spotlight: LB Will Compton

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be taking a closer look at the Titans’ free agent class. One by one, we’ll provide some basic details on the player before making an argument for both sides — why the Titans should, or shouldn’t re-sign that player. We’ll also offer our final verdict and a prediction to go along with it.

Name: Will Compton

Position: linebacker

Age: 31

Why the Titans should keep Compton: Titans Twitter lost their minds when the team brought Compton back prior to the 2020 season, and the joy continued when it was announced that he had made the final 53-man roster. Compton had a couple of stints on waivers and on the practice squad, but he saw plenty of action throughout the year, both on defense and special teams. The Titans didn’t draft a linebacker in 2020 and Compton was signed in late August, presumably to add some depth to the backend of the linebacker room after a couple of undrafted free agents failed to make a positive impression. Compton knows this system well, and could provide the same depth that he did in 2020.

Why the Titans should let Compton walk: He’ll turn 32 years old during the 2021 season. While you value the depth Compton offers on defense and special teams, the organization should be able to find a younger player to fill the same role that Compton did in 2020.

Final verdict: I’m of the opinion that Compton should be back. How can you say otherwise? Not only is he a great personality, but his knowledge of the system makes him an asset, both on defense and on special teams.

Prediction: The Titans break everyone’s heart and move in a different direction.
