Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Titans are going to promote Todd Downing to offensive coordinator. Downing has been the Titans tight end coach for the last two seasons. He was hired to replace Arthur Smith when Smith was promoted to offensive coordinator.
As I said on Twitter, this hire is good with me. Mike went through Downing’s career arc here. Downing was the Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator in 2017 and the offense struggled. That is why some people are upset about the hire. I can understand that, but I don’t think one bad year with a quarterback coming off of a pretty rough injury should write Downing off forever.
The other point here is that he has spent the last two years learning from Arthur Smith in a very successful offense. That should make the transition pretty clean. That’s not everything, but it’s not nothing either. Great grammar there!
I have no idea if Downing will be good here or not, but I am willing to watch it play out before being too high or too low on the hire.
