I love it when we get to the point in the mock draft season where Todd McShay starts to mail in his picks for the Titans. What?? You say that happened back in January? Well, you are right, but this is a whole new level.
McShay and Mel Kiper released a new “dueling” mock draft today. McShay made the Titans pick at 19 and selected Deandre Baker, CB, Georgia. He made that pick with names like Clelin Ferrell, Garrett Bradbury and Jeffery Simmons still on the board. I have gone and on and on about how dumb mocking a TE to the Titans at 19 is. Corner at 19 is infinitely dumber.
McShay’s comment on the pick:
Let’s start the run on corners. There isn’t a ton of value here for a receiver or tight end quite yet, but getting Baker’s instincts into that defensive back unit will provide depth and force some turnovers -- only five teams had fewer than the Titans’ 17 last season.
Yep, the Titans are looking to add depth with the 19th pick, Todd.
McShay also makes the pick for the Titans at 51. The selection is Jerry Tillery, DL, Notre Dame. Kudos to Todd for actually selecting a player that makes sense this time. The Titans would be thrilled to walk away from this draft with Tillery as the 51st overall pick. I don’t see him making it that far.
A good one-on-one run-defender who flashes as a pass-rusher, Tillery fits in neatly next to Jurrell Casey on the Titans’ line.
Kiper makes his only pick for the Titans at 82. The selection is Ben Banogu, OLB, TCU. I don’t hate this pick in a vacuum, but do any of you think they are going to pick 3 defensive players in the first 3 rounds? I don’t,
McShay filled Tennessee’s needs with a defensive tackle and corner in the first two rounds. Banogu could help the void on the edge.
