I said last night when the Adam Schefter report came out that Blaine Gabbert is expected to start for the Titans today against the Jaguars that I wasn’t sure what wrinkles the Titans coaching staff could have left for today. Well Travis Haney of The Athletic speculated this:
My take: Mariota will play some in limited packages. To keep Jags off balance. Short, quick throws and RPO-type stuff. Just can’t depend on him for a full game at this point. https://t.co/WtstMXV4BF

That would be pretty interesting. It would at least be something that could keep that vaunted Jaguars defense on their heels at times. The problem is that if things don’t go well on first and second down you have Mariota facing a third and long when you don’t trust him to throw the ball down the field. Of course you are pretty much screwed against this team in third and long even with a healthy quarterback, and they could always just put Gabbert back in the game.
This is a move that would make a ton of sense. It will be interesting to see if it is what Mike Vabel and Matt LaFleur have planned for today.
