We are all really excited about the prospects of Taywan Taylor in this offense. He showed just what he can do with the ball in his hands in preseason week 2 against the Buccaneers when he took a screen pass for a long touchdown. With that, the rise of Taywan Taylor was on. People were even talking about him in fantasy football circles.
The problem there, however, is that in that came Taylor only played 1 snap with Marcus Mariota while Tajae Sharpe played 10 (of 12). This past week in Pittsburgh Mariota played 19 snaps. Sharpe was in on 12 of those while Taylor was only in on 7.
Can we conclude from those numbers that Sharpe is ahead on the depth chart? It appears that we can, however (again), things are going to look different now that Rishard Matthews has been activated off the PUP. Has Sharpe been playing the role Matthews will now play with Taylor’s role not changing? That’s certainly possible.
We probably won’t get the answer to that question until week 1 in Miami because it seems unlikely that Mariota will play in the preseason finale against the Vikings.
I have so many questions about so many things with this team right now....
