Report: Titans release Matt Cassel, Eric Weems

More cuts for the Titans.

It’s been a busy day for the Titans so far. After releasing veteran safety Da’Norris Searcy this morning, they’ve now released veterans Matt Cassel and Eric Weems.

Weems was signed last year and played mainly on the Titans’ special teams units in 2017. Matt Cassel served as the backup quarterback, but really struggled when forced into action.

Neither move is all that surprising. The Titans had to upgrade at backup quarterback this offseason. That much was clear after the Titans loss in Miami this past season. Marcus Mariota has missed games in each of his three seasons in the NFL, so the Titans have to add a capable signal caller behind him.

I’d expect Jon Robinson to find an answer in free agency, but it’s not totally out of the question that the Titans could draft a project in the later rounds.

Free agency is set to open next week, with the “legal tampering” period opening on Monday. Teams can officially sign players next Wednesday.
