We heard over the weekend that the Titans were shopping Derrick Henry at the trade deadline. That sent a pretty clear message that they were ready to move in a different direction with the run game. Henry just hasn’t been able to get it going this year. Some of it is on him, and some of it is on the offensive line, but whatever the case it was pretty clear heading into last night’s game that Dion Lewis would be taking over as the feature back.
And that is exactly what happened when the Titans took the field on Monday night in Dallas. Lewis out-snapped Henry 59-14 and out-touched Henry 23 to 8.
The preseason debate about which back would do what in this offense seems like ancient history at this point. Who you wanted to own in fantasy football was a hot button topic throughout draft season. The fact is that both guys were largely irrelevant in the first half of the season, but that isn’t going to be the case any longer.
Lewis had 122 total yards last night with one touchdown. He caught all 4 of his targets and carried the ball 19 times in a game where the Titans were tied or led the entire second half. The Titans ran the ball 8 times in the 4th quarter with Lewis handling 6 of those carries.
It is clear that the coaching staff has decided it is time to make the move to feature Lewis. Hopefully that benefits the offense going forward like it did last night.
