Titans "Friday Night Lights" Practice Recap

The Titans took the field for practice at Centennial High School tonight. Who made an impression under the lights?

The Titans held their first "Friday Night Lights" practice this evening at Centennial High School in Franklin. The team announced an attendance of 6,822 at the local high school field. Saturday night the team will be hosting a free open practice at Nissan Stadium starting at 6:00 PM.

Here are the headlines coming out of tonight’s practice.

  • The big news of the night was the announcement that Corey Davis will be considered "week to week" as he recovers from his hamstring strain. Davis did say that he hopes to be ready for Week 1 though.
  • Eric Decker bumped up to the starting role opposite Rishard Matthews today in Davis’ place and put on a show based on reports. He has quickly established a high level of understanding and trust with Mariota.
  • Also moving up the wide receiver depth chart was rookie Taywan Taylor who made a few plays including a deep touchdown grab during team period, but also had a drop on a sure touchdown and fumbled on a kick return.
  • LeShaun Sims was glued to receivers tonight providing really good press coverage. He continues to lead the CB2 race at the moment.
  • The Titans got some work in on return teams tonight with Taywan Taylor joining the group of Jackson, Muhammad, and Weems in the mix to take kick and punt return duties. Jackson looked explosive in this role and he seems to be the front runner to take this job as things stand now, but we’ve still got a long way to go before the season kicks off.
  • Jace Amaro and Josh Carraway both put together good sequences of plays with the 2nd team group which is a good sign. I came away from Monday’s practice less than impressed with those guys so it is good to see them responding.
  • Jayon Brown made some nice plays and may be getting used to the speed and physicality of NFL players. He had struggled during the first few days of padded practices but tonight saw him returning to the form that made him one of the stars of OTAs this summer.
  • This is getting to feel like a broken record with this guy but Derrick Henry looked great again. He got a lot of work with DeMarco Murray sitting out to rest his own tweaked hamstring. The Titans easily have the most talented backup running back in the NFL right now.
  • Reserve outside linebacker Victor Ochi picked up the only new injury of the night as he went down with a leg injury.
  • Mike Mularkey seemed pleased with the level of practice as he has for most of this camp so far. He likes the effort and energy he’s getting from the team.
  • The offense got the upper hand for most of the night and the offensive line also won the battle for the line belt over the defense.
