The Titans pass rush wasn’t the problem in 2017

This isn’t really a surprise.

Last year the Texans and the Jaguars were touted for having really good defenses, and for good reason. It was tough to throw on the Jaguars and the Texans were really good against the pass and strong against the run.

The Titans, on the other hand, weren’t so good on defense. Yes, their numbers against the run were good, but that was a product of teams not ever running the ball because it was so easy to throw. That is what made this graphic from Pro Football Focus pretty surprising to me:

What that tells us is that the problem wasn’t really the pass rush. Those guys were getting it done. It was the fact that the secondary couldn’t cover anyone for any amount of time.

The good news here is that the secondary will be better this year. If Derrick Morgan, Brian Orakpo and Jurrell Casey can repeat those numbers, the defense has a chance to be pretty good in 2017.
