Not to be outdone by Todd McShay, Mel Kiper has released his final NFL mock draft for 2017 (In$ider). He has the Titans taking Jamal Adams with the 5th pick and John Ross with the 18th pick. I would be happier with McShay’s final mock, but I would not walk away disappointed from this one.
I know there are a lot of people out there that think the Titans shouldn’t take a safety because they already have Kevin Byard and they signed Johnathan Cyprien in free agency. Cyprien isn’t going to be used as a true strong safety- more like a dime linebacker. His strength is run support. They still need another guy that can help in coverage. In Adams and Byard they would have 2 guys that are excellent in both run support and coverage. Safety would be a strength of this team for the first time in a very long time.
Here were Kiper’s comments on Adams:
This is a potential trading spot for teams trying to jump in front of the Jets and take Mitchell Trubisky. General manager Jon Robinson already has shown that he isn't afraid to deal -- he moved out of the No. 1 pick, then moved up to No. 8 last year. Adams is simply the best prospect left on the board and a steal at No. 5 overall. Top cornerback Marshon Lattimore is another possibility if the Titans keep the pick.
And on Ross:
With Corey Davis gone, Ross is the next-best pass-catcher available. His 4.22 40 speed is his greatest asset, but he's a well-rounded receiver. He could also be an elite kick returner.
