NFL.com draft guru Mike Mayock has updated his positional rankings for the 2017 NFL Draft. This time of year is always interesting to see how the big draft media personalities shift their boards around. It’s usually based off of what they are hearing, instead of some new revelation they’ve seen on tape.
The shuffling starts at the very top with the quarterbacks. Mayock — a noted Notre Dame homer — moved DeShone Kizer from 1st to 4th in his quarterback rankings. This is due to what he’s hearing, again. You don’t just drop a prospect that you’ve watched all this tape on out of nowhere. Mayock has it going Watson, Trubisky, Mahomes, Kizer, Webb.
Corey Davis dropped from 1st to 3rd in his receiver rankings. Mike Williams and John Ross are the obvious beneficiaries. I think there’s a good shot that Davis is the 3rd receiver off the board now, due to a lack of activity stemming from that ankle issue. He could very well be there at 18.
The big winner on Mayock’s ranking has to be Gareon Conley. It seems like every draft analyst is moving him up their rankings this week. It’s kind of curious how each analyst seems to be following each other’s lead. Maybe they are talking to the same sources. I’ve even seen Conley mentioned as 1B to Marshon Lattimore’s 1A. I don’t see that at all.
Finally, Mayock has backed off his weird ranking of Jabrill Peppers as his number one safety. In no world was Peppers ever close to Jamal Adams or Malik Hooker as a player. Peppers now checks in as his 3rd safety.
We are getting close to draft day, so expect more shuffling like this in the coming days.
