If you know anything at all about Jon Robinson, you knew he was going to be all over Cooper Kupp. Production matters quite a bit to him, based off his lone draft class last season. It appears he’s going to be going after more accomplished receivers this year.
In Tony Pauline’s excellent daily pro day round-up column, he noted that Jon Robinson was on hand at Kupp’s pro day. The Titans have made it pretty clear that they will be adding multiple receivers through the draft, trying to get more reliable targets for Marcus Mariota.
Edge defender Samson Ebukam also worked out during the pro day festivities, but you have to believe Robinson was there to see Kupp.
Kupp is the most accomplished receiver in NCAA history. He comes from an FCS school, but he totaled over 6,400 yards during his career, getting into the endzone 73 times. That’s almost unthinkable.
For all his production, Kupp didn’t test all that well — which is my main concern with him. He’s got pretty good size, but is lacking long speed. He’s one of the “quicker than fast” guys. Take a look at his athletic web from MockDraftable.com.
He isn’t fast. He isn’t explosive. He doesn’t have great length. But he’s produced in a massive way — even against top talent like Marcus Peters and Sidney Jones. I think he could have success in a slot role, but he’s going to be limited. I value him in the 4th round, but he’s been rumored to go as high as the 2nd round.
Add Kupp to the list of options for the Titans on day two. They currently hold two 3rd round selections, emphasis on “currently.” As we all expect, I bet Robinson adds more day two picks before Friday night of the draft gets underway.
