NFL Offseason Monday Musings: 2017 Free Agency

A new offseason series on various NFL-related topics for discussion.

The 2016 NFL season is complete. As of February 6th, the waiver system for 2017 has opened. You may recall the Titans place at the top of the waiver system during the 2016 offseason and preseason.

Throughout the offseason, I’m going to post a series of articles under the headline “Monday Musings.” As the title implies, these will come out each Monday for the duration of the 2017 offseason.

The articles will be meant to spark discussions on a range of NFL topics. Before we know it, free agency will be here, followed by the draft, and not long after we’ll be kicking off opening weekend in September. But we have to get there somehow.

For today’s discussion, the topic will center on the upcoming free agency period.

It’s hard to predict which players will actually come available in free agency, and it’s even harder to know what each team’s draft needs will ultimately be until after free agency. Still, it can be fun to fantasize about seeing certain players in two-tone blue.

The question I pose is, if you could have any haul of free agents, of whom would it consist?

To me, free agency should be all about positioning your team for ultimate flexibility in the draft. Attempting to fill as many roster holes with at least average-level talent as possible is important so that the team can focus on drafting the best players available.

Of all the available players, my wish list would be as follows:

  • FS Eric Berry
  • CB Stephon Gilmore
  • CB Logan Ryan
  • NT Brandon Williams
  • ILB Lawrence Timmons
  • WR Kenny Stills
  • WR Cordarrelle Patterson
  • TE Martellus Bennett

I’m not sure if this is entirely realistic or even doable under the salary cap, but these additions to the roster would make the Titans realistic Super Bowl contenders next season.

I’m not really a fan of Alshon Jeffery for his price tag, and I don’t think Trumaine Johnson will be worth the money either.

Which players would make your dream free agency list?
