Jaguars to hire Doug Marrone as head coach and Tom Coughlin as Executive VP of Football Operations

Adam Schefter says the plan in Jacksonville is to give Doug Marrone the permanent head coaching job.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are taking a page out of the Titans book and hiring their interim head coach, apparently:

There are a lot of people on the interwebs making fun of the Jaguars for this hire. I would love to join in, because I love making fun of the Sparkle Kitties, but Marrone was at the helm when the Jags smoked the Titans on Christmas Eve.

If the report is true, this will be Marrone’s second stint as a head coach in the NFL. He was the head coach in Buffalo in 2013 and 2014. His record with the Bills was 15-17. He opted out of his contract after the 2014 season presumably to get the New York Jets job.

That didn’t happen and he joined the Jacksonville staff as the offensive line coach and assistant head coach.

The first big decision Marrone will have to make is what to do with the 5th year option on Blake Bortles. Here’s to hoping they pick it up.

It has also been announced that the Jags are hiring Tom Coughlin as the Executive VP of Football Operations. Coughlin interviewed for the head coaching job, but apparently all parties involved thought this would be a better fit.
