Jon Robinson has draft currency and he loves it

What moves will me make this year?

NFL: Tennessee Titans-Minicamp The Tennessean-USA TODAY Sports

Jim Wyatt caught up with Jon Robinson and talked some draft strategy. The draft is still 3 months away, and the Titans needs will change based on what happens in free agency, but it is pretty cool to get some insight in to what Robinson is thinking. Wyatt says in the article “the wheels are spinning already.”

This was my favorite quote from Wyatt’s article:

“Draft currency is a powerful thing in this league because it gives you a chance to acquire young talent,’’ Robinson said. “They are less expensive players than guys who have played in the league six, seven or eight, nine or 10 years. So to be able to get two of those guys, or one of those guys if we trade, or three of those guys if we trade. … Whatever it is, draft picks are valuable currency as it relates to team building. The most important thing is getting the pick right. You can have all the picks you want, but if you don’t get them right, then it doesn’t matter.”

The Titans are in the unique position right now of having 3 super start players, Taylor Lewan, Marcus Mariota, and Jack Conklin, under their rookie contract. As Robinson said, that gives the Titans some wiggle room to add pieces to compete right now. Just think about how much maneuvering Robinson did last year by trading down from #1 and then back up to #8 to get Conklin. This year he has 2 first round picks to work with. It should be a fun draft to watch!
