Marcus Mariota took a big step forward in 2016. It sucks that his season came to an end with the broken leg week 16 in Jacksonville, but there is no doubt that the sky is the limit for him going forward. The Titans have found their franchise quarterback and he is on his rookie deal. They have a brief window where the quarterback isn’t taking up a huge chunk of the cap. They will be ready to contend in 2017.
Matt Cassel was signed to a 1-year deal prior to last season. He was serviceable in his playing time. He only had to start one game- week 17 against the Texans. Cassel went 16 26 for 150 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. That is pretty much what Cassel is.
The Titans also had Alex Tanney on the roster. He was on the practice squad for most of the season, but was called up after Mariota was injured. Tanney is never going to be more than a back-up in the league, but I wonder if the the Titans are confident that he could be THE back-up next season. If they aren’t, look for them to bring back Cassel on another 1-year deal.
