Titans roster cuts 2016: The two biggest surprises

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Titans have cut their roster down to 53 players well before the NFL imposed deadline of 3 PM tomorrow. Mike Mularkey said in his press conference this afternoon they did it early because they didn't want to leave the players wondering. That seems like the right thing to do.

As is the case every year, there were a couple of surprises in guys the Titans kept and guys they cut. The biggest surprise cut to me was Dexter McCluster. I have been saying all along that they didn't need him on this roster, but Mike Mularkey kept talking about how their was a place for McCluster. Austin Stanley said on Twitter today that this came down to Mularkey wanting to keep McCluster and Jon Robinson wanting to cut him. Apparently Robinson won. That's a good thing.

The guy that is still on the roster that is the biggest surprise to me is Alex Tanney. I didn't see a scenario where the Titans would keep 3 quarterbacks. They see some value in Tanney and didn't think he would make in onto the practice squad. It will be interesting to see if he survives the weekend when Robinson starts claiming people on waivers.

And remember this (in my Bob Costas voice), the Titans have the first waiver spot- and NFL waivers don't work like your fantasy football league waivers where when you get a guy you move to the end of the line. The Titans have that spot until the season starts. That means Robinson will get every single player he wants that is on waivers.
