Titans vs. Chargers: Three Battles to Watch for

Our long, grueling wander through the NFL off-season is official over. Titans football returns this weekend as the San Diego Chargers come to town. Here are the three roster battles that I'll be keeping tabs on as the night goes on.

Wide Receivers

I know, I know -- we keep harping on it, but it's easily the most intriguing roster battle that the Titans have going right now. The top seems set with Rishard Matthews, Kendall Wright and Tajae Sharpe. I would expect Dorial Green-Beckham to challenge Sharpe and Matthews at some point, but an up and down camp isn't helping things. It will be interesting to see when he gets his chance on Saturday and how long he plays for.

Those four are the locks -- it gets interesting after that. We don't know how many receivers the Titans plan on keeping. My guess currently would be six, but I can easily see them rolling with five. Andre Johnson seems like he would get the nod over anyone else here, but don't write off Tre McBride.

Harry Douglas and Justin Hunter seem like the guys on the outside at this point. However, all that can change with a strong showing in a game setting. With eight receivers going for potentially five spots, every snap counts.

Cornerback pecking order

I am really interested to see where LeShaun Sims and Kalan Reed fall in line. Antwon Blake and Brice McCain could make it tough for the two rookies to find the field early on. Behind them, what do you do with Cody Riggs? Is Blidi Wreh-Wilson finished? Does Marqueston Huff still have a roster spot? There's a ton going on in this cornerback battle. I would guess that McCourty, Cox, McCain and Sims are safe. From there, it's all up for grabs.

Offensive tackle depth

When I look at the roster I see one glaring need -- tackle depth. There's nobody behind Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin. There's Will Poehls and a couple of undrafted free agents. Quinton Spain has actually gotten some work at tackle in case something happens to either Lewan or Conklin. Jeremiah Poutasi was a tackle last season, before getting benched in favor of Byron Bell. I would guess that finding some solid depth behind their top two starters is high up on Jon Robinson's to-do list. Maybe that's the plan for that number one waiver-wire selection when cuts begin.
