Well, this is interesting. Jon Glennon is reporting that the Titans have signed Matt Cassel to a 1-year deal. Jon Robinson is familiar with Cassel because they were both with the New England Patriots at the same time (2005-2008). Cassel will presumably battle Zach Mettenberger for the backup spot in camp.
Keep in mind that it was Ken Whisenhunt/Ruston Webster that really like Mettenberger. Mett is the prototypical Whiz quarterback. Mike Mularkey/Robinson might not like him at all. He is 0-10 in his career as a starter.
They were speculating on 3HL right now that the Titans could be working on a Mettenberger trade. I know people love that idea, but realistically, what kind of return could Mett bring at this point? There is no way they are getting more than a 7th round pick for him. It is more likely that Mett ends up getting cut than traded.
If nothing else, this will have Zach Mettenberger on the top of his game when training camp rolls around. Competition is always a good thing!
