With the NFL owners coming together and voting on new rules soon. The Tennessee Titans website put out an article that listed some of those rules, and there were two that really stood out to me.
The first is a rule to, "The NFL is proposing that touchbacks on kickoffs be placed at the 25-yard-line instead of the 20."
Honestly, that has to be music to Titans fans ears. While the new Titans special teams coach Bobby April may have some tricks up his sleeve to help the return game, but I will have to see it to believe it. Right now, the Titans return unit is one of the most ineffective units in the league, and for the majority of the year they put the Titans in bad situations. Anything that prevents them from returning a kick is great for the Titans.
The second rule is, "There will also be discussion on eliminating the roster cutdown from 90 to 75 after the third preseason game, instead just having one cutdown day from 90 to the regular season limit of 53 the week before the season begins."
There are two reasons I like this so much. The first reason is that it gives Jon Robinson more time to figure out exactly what he has in his late round picks and his UDFAs that he and his scouts have signed. You would hate to cut a player only to have him go to the Detroit Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers or New England Patriots who all look for similar things in a player, only to have him become a starter or a key depth player like LeGarrette Blount turned out to be all those years ago.
The other reason is that with the first priority on the waiver wire, this gives the Titans front office an extra week to dig in and look at players from other teams that they liked and to make a mini big board of players that they want to bring in if they get cut. Jon Robinson has called having first priority on the waiver wire a "second draft" because you can get six or seven good players like that.
All in all, I think another week of film on players would be great for the Titans especially this year and this is the rule that would make the biggest impact on this roster.
