Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network went on 97.5 The Fanatic today and said not to rule out a trade between the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans for Chip Kelly. He mentioned that the deal could include a first-round pick per Tweets from 97.5 The Fanatic. There was a time where I would have loved for the Titans to make a run at Kelly, but his NFL ship has sailed.
Kelly made a handful of moves in Philadelphia last offseason that were really bad. I was willing to wait and see how those things played out on the field before passing judgement. The results speak for themselves. The Eagles are currently 4-7 and sinking fast. Their defense has given up 5 passing TDs in consecutive weeks, and the offense is inept.
Why do we want that guy? Because Marcus Mariota was good with him in college? I get why people are making the connection, but at this point Kelly needs Mariota a lot more than Mariota needs Kelly.
The Eagles have quit. There are a lot of rumors coming out about how much the players hate playing for Kelly. I don't want the Titans to give Mike Mularkey the job next year, but the players are still playing hard for him. That isn't the case in Philadelphia.
There's also the fact that this team has too many holes on the roster to count. They cannot afford to give up a first round pick, or any pick quite honestly, to get a coach.
One more thing to point out, Paul Kuharsky pointed out on 104.5 a few minutes ago that Ian Rapoport also had the Titans doing their homework on a possible trade for Jay Cutler. We have since learned that there was no truth to that.
It is times like these where it stinks that Jim Wyatt writes for the team instead of The Tennessean. You could always count on him to break news and get to the bottom of false rumors, but he is not really in a position to do that anymore in his capacity with Titans Online.
