Titans Fire Ken Whisenhunt

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

It has happened. The Tennessee Titans announced this morning that they have relieved coach Ken Whisenhunt of his duties.  How awesome is it that this happens on the 5 year anniversary of Randy Moss day?!?!?!?  Here is what controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk had to say about the move:

"After thoughtful consideration, the decision has been made to relieve Ken Whisenhunt of his head coaching duties," said Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk. "We have expected more progress on the field, and I felt it was time to move in a different direction. I would like to thank Ken for his efforts with our team, as he worked very hard to try to move us forward."

Whiz led the Titans to a 3-20 record in his tenure as the head coach. Mike Mularkey will serve as the interim head coach.

I cannot tell you how excited I am about this news.  This shows us that the ownership is paying attention to what is happening on the field.  They were willing to pay him an estimated $22 million going forward to not coach the team. (It was reported that his deal was $5 million a year for 5 years.  That means they owe him for 3 full years and about half of this season.)

Mularkey has had 2 pretty successful stints as an offensive coordinator.  He was the OC of the Steelers from 2001-2003 and the Falcons from 2008-2011.  Both of those stints resulted in him getting a head coaching job that did not go well.  It will be interesting to see who will call the plays.
