It's been a long tough year for Tennessee Titans fans. Basically the worst ever.
For the record it's not just the Titans record that made it so bad. It's not just the fact that they were the worst team in the entire league for the first time ever (yes, the Bucs would smoke the Titans if they played this weekend). What made it so bad was how they lost the games and the complete and utter loss of hope for the first time in my life.
It's a new year and the hope-inspiring NFL off season looms in front of us.
Teams can rebuild, revitalize, and re-engineer faster than ever. An injection of top notch free agents followed up by a sprinkling of rookie difference makers at the top of the draft is enough to make any team better, right? Every year fans go through the off season exercise and watch their team get better, fill holes, and upgrade, at least on paper. Hope is renewed for even the lowliest of franchises and all teams will start again next year with an undefeated record and at least the thought that this year could be their year.
Not for me. Not this year.
My only New Year's resolution this year is to not buy into the hype.
I will not get my hopes up. I will not place my trust as I have every year before into the hands that guide this ship. The complete collapse and inability for this team team to even be competitive against the other bottom feeders of the league has shattered my ability to hope. There is no trust left within me.
Like a scorned lover or one who has been cheated on, I must stay strong. My goal is to remain in "prove-it" mode. You can say what you want to me, but your actions will speak louder than words. Time heals all wounds and the pain inflicted fades as months go by. Potential big free agent signings and a bevy of top of the round draft picks will be enticing for sure.
By next August, this will be hard. But unlike the trips to the gym that begin to wane and the sneaking of cigarettes after going cold turkey for a week, I will keep this resolution. I will not buy into the hype while Ken Whisenhunt is in charge. He can prove me wrong, and that would be great. I will still be excited about draft picks. I will still root for my team. But I will NOT buy into the hype!
