The compensation for the pick was a 2015 6th round pick according to multiple sources.

Ryan Mallett was touted as a top trade candidate, but his preseason has been mediocre at best. With just a 53.8% completion rate and just one touchdown in all of preseason, Mallett looked to be a prime candidate to get cut.

For comparison, Ryan Fitzpatrick was actually nearly 5% more accurate than Mallett.

While Mallett has more upside, the Texans may not be getting what they are looking for with the former Razorback product. He is a strong-armed player, but his erratic accuracy and decision making may not make him a better option than Ryan Fitzpatrick in the end.
