Report: Titans release Shaun Phillips

The Tennessee Titans are releasing Shaun Phillips today per Jim Wyatt:

I was pretty excited when the Titans signed Phillips.  He was coming off a year where he had 10 sacks with the Denver Broncos.  The year before that he had 9.5 sacks with the San Diego Chargers.

He got here and pretty much just disappeared.  He didn't play much in the preseason, but there was talk that the team was just resting him because he was a veteran.  Then the regular season came around and he still didn't play very much.  There were honestly times that I forgot he was even on the roster.  He did manage 2 sacks.

Ray Horton knows a whole lot more about defense than I do, but it seems pretty easy to me to find a way to get Phillips on the field.  He is going to contribute more from that position than Derrick Morgan and/or Kamerion Wimbley on passing downs.  Of course, the Titans have had teams run all over them this season, so there haven't been that many "passing downs."

Phillips signed a two-year deal with the team before the season.  His base salary for next year was scheduled to be $2.5 million.  The Titans will save that against the 2015 salary cap.
