Day 1 featured the annual weigh in process in which the NFL turns into an impromptu Victoria's Secret fashion show for over 1,000 league personnel, media, and others. Today was a light day of practice, almost comparing to a walkthrough with pads mixed in with drills. Regardless, a lot can be gleaned from these first day "informal" workouts. Now onto the links!

Practice is over, but Derek Carr is still throwing to Jordan Matthews. Only two guys on the field.

Zack Martin and Ra'Shede Hageman looking good in the one on ones. Martin beat Trent Murphy twice while Hageman ran over Brandon Linder.

Kyle Van Noy has the most composed, naturally balanced LBs here so far. Smooth hands catcher, composed feet thus far. Jordan Tripp solid too

So far, Kyle Van Noy has been top LB in each drill. Picking up RBs, physical/tight with TEs, looking balanced throughout.

DE Dee Ford just destroyed Vanderbilt OG Wesley Johnson, pushing him back into the crowd

Aaron Donald/DL/Pittsburgh made mince meat of Cyril Richardson/Baylor in one-on-one twice.

According to one NFL GM none of the QBs here are franchise players and only 1-2 have draftable grades

My Thoughts:

- SJSU QB David Fales struggled mightily and reinforced the notion that he's just another pop gun offense system QB.

- Fresno State QB Derek Carr will impress everyone with his physical tools but can he get it together mentally?

- BYU DE/OLB Kyle Van Noy was expected to blow up at this event and is well on his way to do so. I wouldn't touch him until the second round, however due to the what is he question.

- It was not a good day for ex-Commodores WR Jordan Matthews and OL Wes Johnson. Matthews had a case of the Darius Heyward Beys and Johnson looked pretty weak in one on one drills. I'm glad that Matthews stayed behind to work though. It shows me commitment to improve at his craft.

- Speaking of Tennessee folks having bad days, Vols NT Daniel McCullers showed up out of shape and looked very weak during drills, often getting beat by inferior OL.

- EIU QB Jimmy Garoppolo had a good day from all reports. I want to see how he does in an environment such as this one where the competition is markedly better.

- Pittsburgh DL Aaron Donald is a beast and has been all year, showing why he swept all the awards for linemen.

- As expected, Baylor S Ahmad Dixon struggled in pass coverage. Dixon is a head case and a pure strong safety.

- Oregon WR Josh Huff was going off, showing his speed and good hands. Huff might be a better pro than college player. He's another classic so much promise unfulfilled due to injuries case.

- One defensive back to keep an eye on is Nebraska CB Stanley Jean-Baptiste. He's a big and tall corner much like the Seattle guys.

Day 2 will bring much more interesting stuff as the practice sessions begin in earnest.
