Tennessee Titans position battles: It sure looks like Rob Turner is your center

Center is another battle we have been keeping track of in training camp. The play log last night suggests that Rob Turner is ahead of Fernando Velasco.

Fernando Velasco played pretty well at center last year.  That, however, doesn't look like it will be enough to earn him the starting job this year.  The coaches have not said anything one way or another, and Velasco has been alternating days as the starter with Rob Turner, but the play log tells you just about everything you need to know.

Velasco was in the game in the 4th quarter last night.  He ended up playing 40 plays last night, which was 69% of the offensive snap.  No one played more snaps than he did, and only Byron Stingily, your 4th offensive tackle, played the same number.  The next three guys after that were all back-up offensive lineman.

On the flip side, Turner played just 26 snaps.  That happens to be the exact same number of snaps as Jake Locker.

This doesn't mean that the battle is done, but it sure looks like Turner is the leader in the clubhouse.  It will be interesting to see if Brian Schwenke can have something to say about it when he returns from injury.
