NFL Supplemental Draft profile: CB Damond Smith

New, comments

My report on 2013 NFL Supplemental Draft prospect Damond Smith.

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

The Who: Damond Smith CB South Alabama (formerly Western Michigan)

Damond Smith was an unheralded two-star CB out of Michigan when he committed to W. Michigan. At W. Michigan he had a decent two year stint in which he played in 18 games and managed to accrue 56 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

Recently in the 2013 NFL Draft the Green Bay Packers tried to sign Smith to an UDFA contract, only to learn that he wasn't eligible yet.

This series of tweets by former scout John Middlekauff should shed some light on the type of player that Smith is:

The What: CB/S

Most of Smith's highlight film is devoted to his play off the ball where he often times gives WRs five (or more) yards of cushion. Smith could get away with this at the college level because of his instincts, smooth backpedal and ability to quickly redirect. In the NFL he will need to tighten up on the line of scrimmage or else he will be torn apart by quick routes and double moves (slants, curls, sluggos, etc.) but that is a job for his coach.

Personally I think he fits best as a safety. Smith's highlight tape shows his tenacity and his effort in the running game, and while 5'11" is a bit short for a CB today it is still ideal size for a FS/SS.

The When: July 11, 2013

The supplemental draft will occur just five days from when this was posted.

The Where: Over the airwaves.

There is no location for the Supplemental Draft per se, but the highest bidder for each team is usually leaked on the internet or on television the day of the event.
