The Titans have repeatedly stated that they are concerned about the depth at the free safety position. While the coaching staff is giving Alterraun Verner a long look during the course of training camp and the preseason, it might be a good idea to put together a list of names. Here are my three suggestions.
1. Kerry Rhodes
Rhodes has three seasons with four interceptions, and has only failed to tally any interceptions once. The Titans could used a veteran ball hawk to pair with Bernard Pollard and company.
2. Quintin Mikell
Mikell is good not great. He was a staple in Philly for eight years, and after a disappointing stint with the Rams he is a free agent.
3. Abram Elam
Elam is a defender whose experience with blitz-heavy defenses may be his best asset. Playing with Rob Ryan in the past may make him a smart player to add since Gregg Williams is going to implement a similarly aggressive scheme.
*Bonus: Trade for Jarius Byrd
Jarius Byrd is very unhappy in Buffalo, and who has more connections to Buffalo than the Titans? The Titans could afford to send Nate Washington and possibly Kenny Britt over in a trade for one of the top young safeties in the league. Sure the Titans would be getting the best part of the deal, but the Bills refuse to pay him what he is worth and with all three players scheduled to hit the free agent market in 2014 what is the big deal.
If Byrd is just going to sit out, it makes sense for the Bills to add some useful pieces instead of dealing with a headache. The Titans should be able to re-negotiate with certain players to try to open up enough space to meet Byrd's demands.
