This is the start of a new series where we look at each position on the roster and compare it to last season. The ultimate goal of this exercise is to answer one simple question: Is the Titans 2013 roster better than the Titans 2012 roster?
2012 quarterbacks: Jake Locker, Matt Hasselbeck, Rusty Smith
2013 quarterbacks: Jake Locker, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Rusty Smith
Advantage: 2013
There is really only one player difference from last year to this year, but they position has been upgraded. Locker comes into the season knowing that it is his job, and with another year of being in the league under his belt. He didn't get to play a full schedule last season, but he was in the building every day. That is invaluable experience.
Matt Hasselbeck did a nice job in his two years here, but it was clear at the end of last year that he is no longer a starting caliber quarterback in this league. That is not the case with Fitzpatrick. He struggled to live up to the contract the Bills gave him, but he will be solid coming off the bench if Locker goes down with an injury.
So, did the Titans get better at quarterback this year?
