Positives

I'll start with the fact that he's a freak of an athlete. I know his 40 time wasn't that great at the combine, but he plays much faster on tape. He's a good player in coverage albeit he's a tad undersized for the 4-3 MLB spot. He will be a special teams ace from day one. He has good hands (he was a safety a few years ago) and like I said before, he has good instincts in coverage. He racked up a ton of tackles in college, leading his team even though he missed 4 games.

Negatives

Maddeningly inconsistent. Makes a great tackle or play and then the next play he misses a tackle. He's not a big hitter and gets dragged by large backs and receivers. Takes poor angles to the ball (due to poor instincts in the run game) and then gets himself washed out of plays. He's overaggressive in the run game due to not being able to recognize plays immediately (football IQ problem?).He sheds blocks beautifully one play and then the next two or three he gets pushed out of the play. His tackling is mediocre and that's an awfully gracious assessment. His form is borderline atrocious as he has way too many arm tackles. He also just whiffs on too many tackles (something we don't need more of). It was so frustrating to watch him do so well against Alabama in the SEC championship game and then just be awful in other games. I watched the GT game so I could see how he handled the run game (they run the triple option), and it was just a nightmare. In a word, frustrating. Also the off field headaches. Got a DUI this offseason, and was suspended for 4 games at the beginning of this year.

Conclusion

Did you notice the positive section was so short and negative section so long? Needless to say, I've soured on him a bit after watching so many games of his. He is so new to the position that his instincts should improve, leading to better angles and not being so overaggressive. Coaching could improve the tackling quite a bit. His upside is tremendous, but his floor is sea floor level. He could end up just like Aaron Curry and be out of the league in just a few years. So, no I would not take him in the draft unless he was in the 3rd round. He's so raw right now and we can't afford that. Some team will take the gamble and he'll be a stud, or in the CFL. No in between.
