Tennessee Titans vs Arizona Cardinals: Recap

The Titans played well for most of the game, but the usual mistakes showed up again and ultimately caused Tennessee the game.

Offense

The offense had some great moments today. The passing game was on fire for most of the game, and ultimately resulted in over 400 yards and multiple TDs. Kendall Wright had a huge day with 12 receptions for 150 yards. Wright is really starting to break out as a top-end receiver, and if he ever gets a franchise QB that can stay on the field he will be a household name.

Delanie Walker and Nate Washington also had big days, combining for 15 receptions for 145 yards and a TD. Walker continues to prove that he is a top-10 tight end, and any time the Titans need someone to be the "counterpunch" to Kendall Wright all they have to do is look to the tight end.

Another big contributor to the Titans 35 points was fan favorite Micheal Preston. Despite only finishing the game with three receptions, the undrafted free agent ended up with two TDs and was crucial in the redzone. Justin Hunter (who didn't play) brings Nate Washington's ability to stretch the field and make dynamic catches and combines them with Preston's huge frame. So while I would have preferred to just have Hunter on the field, Preston isn't a bad "plan B" when Hunter isn't on the field, especially in the redzone. It will be interesting to see how this boost affects Preston's game status long term.

Through three quarters, the Titans were really playing mistake free football however (just like every other game) Fitzpatrick was the key in losing the game. Fitzpatrick's erratic passing lead to a pick six and a game losing INT late, but really there were two other times when he could have easily been picked off. The Titans probably won't win another game with Fitzpatrick at quarterback and should consider playing John Skelton or Rusty Smith for pure evaluation purposes.

Defense

Jurrell Casey has been great for the Titans, and didn't disappoint today. Casey was constantly making piles in the running game, and ended up with 1.5 sacks. The rest of the defense was decent, but overall didn't make plays when they needed to.

Alterraun Verner dropped a clear INT that would have given the Titans a big momentum boost. Derrick Morgan, was close but never really got home in crucial situations. Zach Brown and Akeem Ayers accounted for a combined three tackles, and honestly had forgettable days. If the Titans want to go from competitive defense to a great defense, then they need to make those big plays.

What is next?

Next the Titans have an away game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and that game will likely decide who ends up in second place of the AFC South.
