Rob Rang has put out a mock draft and he has the Titans taking Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri with the 10th pick. This is the second mock I have seen this week that has the Titans taking Richardson, and I really don't understand it. There is no doubt Richardson is a rare talent, but defensive tackle is pretty far down on the Titans list of needs.
Here is what Rang had to say about the pick:
Getting four touchdowns off of defense and special teams in their Week 17 victory over Jacksonville may have provided a bit of salve to a group that was often burnt in 2012 but it won't hide the fact that this unit allowed a league-worst average of 29.4 points a game. The Titans have some young talent on the edges but remain woefully undersized and unproductive down the middle. The 6-4, 310-pound Richardson is surprisingly athletic and led all SEC interior defensive linemen with 75 tackles.
I would disagree that they are undersized and unproductive down the middle. The combination of Jurrell Casey, Sen'Derrick Marks and Mike Martin is not undersized or unproductive.
I do have to admit that the way Rang has the top 9 going would put the Titans in a tough spot. They will be hoping that one of the top three edge rushers falls to them. In Rang's mock they were all picked in the top 9.
I know this is not very popular, but if the draft goes this way I am drafting Manti Te'o. He would bring stability and leadership to middle linebacker on this team- something the Titans desperately need. You can then find more of a hybrid role for Colin McCarthy.
