Tennessee Titans select LB Zach Brown with the 52nd pick in the NFL Draft
If the major national talent evaluators are to be trusted, the Titans couldn't have asked for a better scenario with their 2nd round pick. Devon Still, one of the top pass rushers, and Peter Konz, universally acclaimed as the top C in the draft were still on the board.
So, of course they went out of left field.
Selecting Zach Brown is really interesting when you look at this regime's M.O. Brown is an incredible athlete, and one of the fastest linebackers in the draft. In fact, Mike Mayock claimed he might be the fastest straight-line runner he's ever seen at the LB position. Even better: Wes Bunting raves about his ability to cover the pass in zone and man to man schemes. Yes. You read that right. A Titans LB who can cover a TE!
However, right now the universal opinion on his is that he isn't always a great tackler and can be caught freelancing. That's a bit of an issue when you're talking about a linebacker. Also, there are some questions that the holes in his game, and his propensity to freelance, may stem from not have a serious enough work ethic. That's very odd to hear about a Reinfeldt/Webster draftee.
Still, if Gray and his staff can get him to focus on better techniques, Brown looks to be a natural fit at the WLB spot. He also gives them an athletic rusher to put on the outside in 3-4 looks if Gray is still as serious about that as he was last year.
You put Brown out there with Ayers and McCarthy, and you've got one hell of a set of athletes at the LB position.
Here's the link to Mayock's reports on Brown.
