Jim Wyatt tweeted this morning that Tennessee Titans CB Cortland Finnegan didn't show up for a team meeting this morning. Wyatt said he believes it is because Finny is unhappy with his contract.
I guess at this point we cannot be 100% sure that there is something else going on with Finnegan, but Jim Wyatt has never been one to stir things up like this if he isn't virtually certain what he is reporting is true.
We can all understand why Chris Johnson isn't in camp. He is the best running back in the NFL and is due to make $800,000 this year, but there is absolutely no reason for Finnegan to pull this crap. He is scheduled to make almost $4 million dollars this year and is coming off his worst year with the team. What possible leverage could he think he has to leave camp?
I really hope there is something else going on because we have raved about Cortland's leadership this offseason with all of the work he put in for the workouts at Father Ryan during the lockout. If the reason that he didn't show up this morning is because he isn't happy with his contract, he has undone all of the goodwill he built up among Titan fans, who are already the only ones who will defend him against the bashing he takes from all around the league.
St. Prattrick brings us the update from Jason Cole at yahoo, which includes this lowdown:
Finnegan and agent Terry Watson told the team before training camp that Finnegan wanted a new contract or wanted to be traded to a team willing to give him a new deal. Titans head coach Mike Munchak, defensive coordinator Jerry Gray and secondary coach Marcus Robertson all encouraged Finnegan to report to camp, indicating to him that the team would respond positively to his request for a new contract if he reported.
Trade him.
I really hope the Titans just move forward with Alterraun Verner on one side and Jason McCourty on the other.
