Despite finally being healthy enough to practice, Kenny Britt won't be on the field on Saturday when the Titans line up against the Rams. The team is being cautious with Britt's ailing hamstring, and they don't want to risk a setback in his recovery.
Jake Locker is making huge strides in fixing the accuracy issues that worried so many people during the draft process. Locker is working closely with OC Chris Palmer and QB coach Dowell Loggains, and Damian Williams says he can see a big improvement since the two practiced informally at Father Ryan last month.
While Jared Cook is wowing the crowds at training camp with circus catches, don't sleep on the progress being made by fellow TE Craig Stevens. The 4th year TE has become a favorite target for Matt Hasselbeck in practice. This group of tight ends (Cook, Stevens and Daniel Graham) has the potential to be one of the best, and most well-rounded, we've ever seen in Nashville. Stevens is already a good blocker, and he could finally be on the verge of showing the pass catching ability the Titans were projecting when they took him in the 3rd round of the 2008 draft.
Boclair takes a look at the career of Yamon Figurs, and how the speed demon ended-up bouncing around the NFL before landing in Tennessee. Figurs is another one of those guys who is a longshot to make the final roster, but could make a case for himself with a few more plays like his touchdown pass on Saturday. Realistically, as Boclair notes, Figurs is just insurance in case Mariani gets hurt in the preseason.
Colin McCarthy probably won't get a chance to start this year, but he's still doing everything he can to impress the Titans coaching staff. McCarthy is tentatively set to back-up Barrett Ruud at the MLB spot, and LB coach Frank Bush is realistic about where McCarthy is right now:
"(McCarthy) has still got to improve in almost every area, but the kid is taking heed of what we’re saying and getting better every day," Bush said. "He’s got a knack in pass coverage and is learning the run game as we go about it, so he’s moving along quite nicely."
Chris Johnson continues to make the news with his lockout, and SI is the latest outlet to say CJ is making a smart move by pushing for a new contract now.
The New York Times' The Fifth Down blog previews the Titans' 2011 season.
Jimmy and I weren't too impressed with Jamie Harper last Saturday, but the good reviews continue to pour out of camp.
Sen'derrick Marks and Nick Schommer returned to practice yesterday, though Marks probably won't play in the next two preseason games. Schommer is ready to go, and he'll need to make a huge impression to win one of the final 53 roster spots.
Well played Joey Harrington. Well played.
Kenny Britt may not be able to get out on the field, but there's another Britt who has been tearing it up: Nia Britt, Kenny's cousin, set a Junior Olympics record in the shot put a few weeks ago.
