It was reported yesterday that the Titans had asked for and received permission to interview Mike Mularkey who is currently the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons. Mularkey started his coaching career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1994. He was there for two seasons before becoming the tight ends coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1996. Then in 2001 Bill Cowher named him the offensive coordinator. While the OC of the Steelers Mularkey earned the nickname Inspector Gadget, according to Wikipedia, because he came up with so many trick plays for guys like Hines Ward and Antwaan Randel El.
In 2004 Mularkey succeeded Gregg Williams as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. He actually wasn't that bad in Buffalo. They rallied for a 9-7 season his first year, but followed that up with a 5-11 in 2005. Mularkey stepped down in January of 2006 after a disagreement with Marv Levy.
From Buffalo he went to Miami in 2006 to serve as Nick Saban's OC. He was demoted to tight ends coach after Saban left the Dolphins and was fired with the rest of the coaching staff after the 2007 season.
He joined the Falcons in 2008 and has been the OC there for the past three seasons.
Mularkey is an intriguing guy. He should be able to assemble a solid staff because he has coached with a lot of people in the league. One red flag for me is that, according to some Falcons fans, he got a little conservative down the stretch last season. I know that is the last thing we want in here again.
