Yesterday I was reading another cool sports blog, Deadspin when I came across a link for Hireafan.com. It is a pretty crazy idea. You can sign up to become a fan that gets paid $5 to watch a game and cheer for a team. All you have to do is watch the game, take a picture of yourself while watching the game and then write a short summary of the game. The site will then pay you via paypal. You can get a fan for a game by paying $20. I emailed the founder of the site, Jeff Bowser, to ask him some questions about the site.
I'm a 29 year old computer proffecional from Canada who is a Vancouver Canucks fan, and no allegiance to any NFL/NBA/MLB team
2. Where did you get the idea to start this site?
The site was set up I had no country to support during the world cup of soccer earlier this year. I auctioned off my loyalty on eBay and generated quite the stir in the Canadian market. The website secures sponsors for particular games. The site now accommodates both NFL and NHL games. There are plans to expand the site to support the upcoming NBA season as well as support for MLB next spring.
3. How many hits do you get a day on your site?
About 2500 hits/day
4. How many people do you have signed up to be a fan?
35 fans signed up as of now, and growing daily.
5. Do you have any lucky fans? By that I mean have you found anyone that you have paid to be a fan that seems to always cheer that team on to victory?
No lucky fans as of yet, although I did have a fan cheering for the Edmonton Oilers tonight, and they came back from a 2 goal deficit in the 3rd to win, so I might have one in the making!
Erron Kinney has been placed on injured reserve which ends any chance he had of playing this season.
