Rams Coaching Whirlwind: January 8th Edition

I've been stopping by the Lions' SBnation blog, Pride of Detroit, and came across this story and immediately wanted one for the Rams. So after a bit of work, here you go:

Coach Current team Current position
Status
Todd Bowles Miami Dolphins Asst. / Secondary Coach Cleared to interview
Jim Fassel N/A TV/radio commentator Interviewed today

Leslie Frazier

Minnesota Vikings Defensive Coordinator Cleared to interview
Jim Haslett Rams Head Coach Interviewed Jan. 5th
Josh McDaniels New England Patriots Offensive Coordinator

Interview scheduled
Jan. 9th

Winston Moss Green Bay Packers Asst. / Linebackers Coach Interviewed Jan. 3rd
Rex Ryan Baltimore Ravens Defensive Coordinator Interview scheduled
Jan. 11th
Ray Sherman Dallas Cowboys Wide Receivers Coach Cleared to interview

Those of you expecting to see a name from the trio of Russ Grimm, Steve Spagnuolo or Jim Schwartz, those three are still stuck in the speculation phase. If you have any newer articles to confirm anything in the links or anything to add to the table, leave it in the comments. Again, this isn't meant as an official statement, but just as a visual aid to help get all the wackiness that's been thrown at us in 2009 into a single & digestible piece of information.

Devaney would like to have the coach named in time for the first big personnel evaluation event of the offseason — Senior Bowl week (the third week of January)

Jim Thomas at the Post Dispatch put out a story today that runs down some of the issues he's dealing with, and a summarized description of his management philosophy.

[Andre Smith]'s not as polished as [Jake] Long was coming out of Michigan, but Smith possesses better overall physical tools. It's no secret the Rams wanted Long badly last year so it's safe to assume Smith will be high on their wish list a few months from now.

From Todd McShay's first mock draft of 2009 over at ESPN which has the Rams picking Alabama OT Andre Smith at #2.

3k from TST (Rams) drops by

What's up, Lions fans.  3k from TurfShowTimes here.  Obviously, I'm just here to get some insight as to what you all think/want to do with the # 1 pick now that you have that forgettable (or was it unforgettable?) season behind you.
In all seriousness, how do you guys not draft Bradford or Stafford at #1?  You guys haven't had a franchise QB since Bobby Layne.  I understand the sentiment from Bosco's thread, but how would you convince a useful FA to play for you guys right now?  Personally, I think your franchise would be best suited in drafting B-ford or S-ford and giving him a year under Daunte with whomever you hire as head coach to mentor him.  You guys still have Calvin Johnson and the #20 pick.  If Maualuga is still on the board, he'd be a nice pick up.  It would at least give you youth and talent at the 2 core positions on each side of the ball with a playmaker in Johnson and the experience Kevin Jones brings.

Look, the Lions have an absolute ton of work to do.  But to try to do it by filling in the edges won't give you the foundation to build on.  I would think the 3 things you need most going forward are a QB, a MLB (not named Paris), and a front office.  Just my thoughts.  Hit me up with yours.

(Oh, and if you want to see my most recent mock draft, have at it)

NFL Draft watch: Late Dec. Mock Draft, Picks 1-11

Updated mock from the last mock (here), which was about a month ago.  I based that draft order on how I predicted the final two games of the season for every team and calculated strength of schedule based on those predictions.  Don't say I'm not working for you.  Also keep in mind my most recent O-linemen rankings (here) and MLB rankings (here).  Mel Kiper Jr.'s hair is officially on the clock...

I was a draftnik before there were draftniks. I'd read stuff and chart stuff. I'd try to handicap where players were going. ... I don't know why, I mean, it's weird. This has always been an interest of mine — personnel and scouting.

From the mouth of new Rams GM Billy Devaney in a profile story in the P-D, here. Makes you wonder why you would waste years with a money man as your GM instead of a personnel guy.

Rams v. Falcons grades

Well, it wasn't much of a season, but damn if it didn't end on a high note.  We played hard-nosed, spirited football against an 11-5 team with the NFL's second leading rusher.

We'll talk about the franchise and where we go from here, but, for now, let's just look at the final game of the 2008 season for the Rams, a game that showed us what we could be next year.

  Grades after the fold.

Bowl Watch; Sat., 27 Dec. - Tue., 30 Dec.

I thought instead of just the normal draft watch, it would be more useful to everyone to have a primer on who to watch in the bowl games leading up to New Years.  So if you're going to watch any of these games, write down these names.  And tell your family while you're watching that 3k told you about these guys first!

NFL Bowl watch after the fold.

Jay Zygmunt and the St. Louis Rams have come to mutual agreement that he will step away as the team's president and general manager, effective immediately, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

It's official, according to ESPN. And thus begins the next era of the Rams.

4. Jay Zygmunt, president, Rams. His resignation is apparently imminent.

From Mike Sando at ESPN's NFC West blog on whos stock is falling in the NFC West. If/when Zygmunt does leave, the Rams immediately begin the climb back towards respectability.
