With the 22nd Pick in the 2008 SB Nation Mock Draft....

....the Dallas Cowboys select Antoine Cason, cornerback, Arizona.  BTB mentions that he is making this pick assuming that no deal gets done for #32.  The Cowboys should probably make this pick even if they get #32 because he won't be on the field long.

This leaves just one pick from the Pittsburgh Steelers before our pick.  Right now I am leaning towards either Felix Jones, Devin Thomas, James Hardy, or Calias Campbell.  Thoughts and comments below....

Also, the MCM mock draft will start tomorrow.  I already have the first three picks.  Does anyone want to volunteer to take the Raiders?

BTW, I'll do the Raiders if nobody else will.
They choose DT Glenn Dorsey.

DE no doubt
There are no available DT at this point that worth our 1st round pick. We need a downfield menace WR but if Kelly and DeSean Jackson are gone it think no other worth the risk at this point. So our pick should be DE Campbell or Merling if is still available, maybe even Groves who is only a pass rusher. But don't be surprised if they take Felix Jones. We also need a G but Titans haven't taken a G so high in recent years, and when they took T Ross he was not in the 100 top prospects.

my order of preference...
  1. Hardy
  2. Thomas
  3. Otah
DEAR M. REINFELDT: PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS GOOD DRAFT EARL BENNETT!!!

I tried to deny it, but I just can't...
Here's my real choices
  1. Bennett (maybe a reach, but the only lock-down star and good guy I know of left on the board)
  2. Hardy
  3. Otah

So...
...do you maybe like Bennett? ;)

by hartley on Apr 8, 2008 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

just a little
And I'd love to see what Vince, Earl and 'Dinger could together...

you know my feelings on Hardy....
He does have a little baggage, but I watched every IU game the past couple of years and his off the field problems were very rarely mentioned.  So little I had to look up to see what they were during the combine.  He is a very good receiver, good hands, uses his body well and has good speed for someone his size.

by gotitans27 on Apr 8, 2008 12:12 PM CDT reply actions

worried about the baggage too
but I've also read reports from Indiana saying that he was close to the very inspirational coach there who died of brain cancer in 2007, and that his widow continues to have a huge impact on Hardy's life.  He's been trouble free and a model citizen since then.

It'll be interesting to see what the staff thinks about it: we will probably the most gun-shy team in the league when it comes to taking 1st and 2nd round guys with criminal baggage for the next several years, but from the outside looking in I think this guy deserves to be picked here...

no wr please
personally I'd stay away from a WR, who could just as easily get cut than make an impact (remember, right now we have jmac, 12gage, roydell, bj, p.williams, ealy, c.davis)....

so, i would draft the best defensive player available.........regardless of position......

and as much as i like felix jones, there will be guys in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds that will produce just as much as he would.....

defense, defense, defense!!!!!!!

I agree on defense....
....but who is the best defensive player available?

I disagree
we have quantity, but very little actual quality at WR... I mean if any of these guys caught 70 passes they'd be a surprise of the league type-guy:

* 12gage (nice possession Wr.. especially as a no.2)
* jmac (sucked for the Jets, so a he's question mark at best... would suprise me to see him get cut in camp)

  • p.williams + m.williams (REALLY curious to see what-if-anything 'Dinger can get out of them)
  • roydell, bj, ealy, c.davis (3rd-5th guys who haven't proven they can do anything significant for 16 games)
Bennett, Hardy or Thomas would not get cut. I promise you.  They may not be R.O.Y. stud from game 1, but I have no doubt they'll be very good for us.

I agree on the quality problem....
....but which of those guys are better than anyone we have?  I am not sure any of them are.  It looks like we will be going defense.

then it's almost gotta be
Calais Campbell... Dan Connor is an outside shot, but Calais is better at a position of need.

Amen
order of preference:
  1. Hardy
  2. Thomas
  3. Bennett
Calais Campbell is a washup.

just curious...
did you see him play any?  I had never heard of him until after the NCAA season was over.  What's the rub against him?

Was poised for a huge year
Then fell on his face. He was preseason all-American but didn't even make all-ACC.  Has been sinking like a stone.  Was about half as productive his jr year as soph.  Gained weight and got slow.

Calais Campbell
Then get Jamaal Charles in the second.

if we are looking for best defensive player available regardless of position

by LastSd on Apr 8, 2008 2:01 PM CDT reply actions

I thought the best available...
...was an OLB.  And, let's face it, that's a HARD sell.  I'd rather reach for a DE than draft a LB.

Calais Campbell
He could be a Kevin Carter type 300 lb. DE who moves inside on passing downs

I still think Felix Jones would look good in Titan
Blue, but it's hard to argue with I can see your point.  And God knows the D-Line still needs work.

Seriously.....
if the titans were in this position, with the other receivers off the board, I would be screaming--HARDY, HARDY, HARDY!  The "baggage" he has is nothing.  He isn't a strip club kind of guy.  He did make a mistake, and I'm not making light of it...but he is not a constant off the field issues type of guy.

Our receivers are so lacking, we have done nothing to help in the offseason.  It HAS to be a receiver here!!!!

by gotitans27 on Apr 8, 2008 3:58 PM CDT reply actions

felix jones
these mock drafts are great and all, but i'm hoping in the real draft that the titans either trade up or down. i feel like the guys they should target are either a little too high (merling, harvey, otah) or a little too low (earl bennett, calais campbell, even felix jones a little).

in any case, felix jones or jeff otah please.

I understand
what everyone is saying about needing to go Defense, but please just hear me out.

I don't think it's fresh in your minds how much we are lacking a playmaker. Countless times during the season and beginning of the off-season we were all going crazy about how we need a WR. If we didn't get one through FA, we needed to get one in the draft. What has changed other than the time of year?

I am just not ready to go another season without a WR that can either stretch the field or go up over someone and actually catch a ball that Vince throws.  We need a threat to open some things up. A guy over the top while Crumpler runs underneath sounds like Music City Touchdowns to my ears. I love smash-mouth football but it would be nice to have a guy we can count on when we do throw.

We have a very good defense, we could get a quality player for the D-line in the 2nd rd. Who knows what WRs will be left next time we pick? Probably not good.

As for a HB, I really like Felix Jones, but are we really prepared to say we wasted a 2nd rd pick on Chris Henry?  Lendale already showed he can carry the load. How is there a need for a HB?

I would have made an exception for Talib but only because we were getting such great value at a position we will need within a year or 2.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Apr 8, 2008 5:56 PM CDT reply actions

I still think
that the best available player regardless of position is Felix Jones IMO, but like BBB said its hard to already to "give up" on Chris Henry. With saying that I'd still draft him if he is there when we pick

Also like BBB said we have a defense so I can't see us going D in the 1st, but with the Titans you never know.

Well anyway here are my top 3 choices for our pick in order.

  1. F. Jones
  2. D. Thomas
  3. J. Hardy
